Visit Montpelier - History & Happenings | Orange, Va

The story of Montpelier began when Ambrose Madison (ca. 1696–1732) decided to strike out west on the new frontier. He had no way of knowing that his grandson, James Madison, would on that very land cultivate revolutionary ideas that would shape a new nation.

James Madison’s wife, Dolley, was a social and political force of nature. As America's First First Lady she influenced policy and pop culture, and wielded substantial influence.

Their legacy lives on…just under 10 minutes from Frank Hardy Sotheby’s office on Main Street.

Montpelier is open for tour, most days, 10-3pm. There's a lot to do at Montpelier: take a guided tour, explore the galleries, stroll over 8+ miles of public walking trails & visit the archaeology lab.
